Are you properly prepared for a chemical spill?

If you work in any industrial setting – or even drive a truck, it’s just a matter of time until you find yourself in the middle of a spill. Fortunately, it’s not hard to be prepared – start by getting this kit.

So what is a chemical spill kit? Since you probably won’t know which types of chemicals you might have to contain, it’s a good idea to be prepared for any eventually. And it’s usually more practical to go with chemical spill kits, also known as universal spill kits. These can handle oil on land AND water based liquids along with a huge array of chemicals. There are very few things it can’t handle, and if you use any of those, you would know it (I’m talking mercury and acids, for the most part).

So get a universal or chemical spill kit, and you’ll be in fine shape. Except… you should actually get more than one. Think about the average size of the spills you’re likely to encounter. Then err on the generous side and get the number of kits you’d need to clean it up. There’s really no such thing as too many kits. After all, they’ll keep. This is especially true if you get our Cleanup Stuff duffel bag chemical spill kit. Even after you’ve used part of it, just put any unused items back in the duffel bag, zip it up, and they’re good for when you need them because extra gloves and disposal bags are included. We do recommend that you top up the kits so you can feel confident you’ll have enough for any eventuality.

So what is in those duffel bag kits?

They include various numbers of sookers. The one I’m talking about today, which is the duffel bag chemical spill kit with granular absorbent, has 3 large sookers and 10 absorbent pads. That’s only about half as many as you’ll find in our other duffel bag kits. Of course this means there’s room for 2 1-pound shaker cartons filled with granular absorbents. Those can be very handy in lots of situations. In fact, we call this universal spill kit with granular absorbents our “ready for anything” kit!

Sure, we love our sookers, and we find that they are great at fitting into tight spots if needed. But granular absorbents not only fit into all sorts of places but can be swept into corners and across larger surfaces to soak up the errant liquid, and yes, they can be swept up and disposed of. It simply increases your options when it comes to getting a spill cleaned up.

Like all of our other duffel bag kits, the chemical spill kit also includes a pair of safety goggles, two pairs of gloves, and two disposal bags, so you can get rid of the soiled absorbents in a safe manner. Last but not least, it includes an instruction sheet with detailed step-by-step directions on how to use everything in the bag, just in case.

Finally, there’s the bag itself. It’s bright yellow which makes it easy to find, whether you’ve stashed it in the back of your truck or behind the seat. It’s made out of super sturdy and water resistant poly canvas, and it comes with an adjustable and detachable shoulder strap. The bag weighs next to nothing, so it’s easy to tote around and have one with you anywhere you might need one. And of course it fits into your truck, your shop, and all kinds of other places. Yes, even if you get several of them, which we recommend. After all, you want to be properly prepared.

How to use a chemical spill kit?

The key is to use the included absorbents to contain the spill and clean it up. Exactly how you go about it depends on the nature and the location of the spill as well as its size.

But basically, you can place any of the included absorbents right on top of the spill to soak up the liquid. And the sookers can be arranged around the spill in order to contain it. They’re super pliable, which means they can also be squished into nooks and crannies to prevent any of the liquid from leaking.

The granular absorbent can be sprinkled onto the liquid, and the individual granules will absorb the liquid and can then be swept up and disposed of. It’s like kitty litter, which, of course, IS a granular absorbent!

While using absorbents isn’t all that complicated at first sight, training on how to do it properly is still very important, especially in order to protect your team members who are doing the cleaning up. That’s because often the liquids that need cleaning up are quite toxic, so you’ll want to impress on them to use the included protective safety gear, the goggles as well as the gloves before they start with the cleanup effort.

Of course our duffle bag spill kits conform to all the major safety regulations, including 29 CFR, 40 CFR, and 49 CFE. They also conform to most local regulations, although you may want to double check, especially when it comes to discarding the contaminated absorbents.

And since cleaning up spills promptly is important to protect our environment, you’ll be glad to know that our absorbents are also environmentally friendly. Our sookers contain recycled absorbents, and all our absorbents are non-toxic, at least before they’re being used…

Is the chemical spill kit in a duffel bag right for you?

It is if you want a small, easy to store kit with a lot of absorbency power, along with the extra flexibility that is offered by the granular absorbents. No matter what the nature of the spill, this kit will be ready to handle it. The only additional consideration is the size of potential spills. You probably know best what size spills you’re most likely to encounter, and can plan ahead accordingly by getting the proper number of spill kits to handle them.
